Mongomo Impresses in Her First Game with Belgian Team

Basketball Brunehaut announced the signing of Maria Mongomo for the 2023-2024 Belgium Top Division Women's season. Mongomo, a 28-year-old Spanish guard at 175cm, has already played one game with the team, making a significant impact. In her debut on October 14, 2023, against Namur, she played 24 minutes, scoring 15 points with a 44% field goal percentage. She secured 6 rebounds, 2 offensive and 4 defensive, and recorded 2 assists, 1 steal, and 2 turnovers. Despite her contributions, Namur narrowly won 78-74.

Before Brunehaut, Mongomo had a standout season with Pully in the Swiss SBL league, averaging 18.9 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 2.2 steals per game over 20 matches. She was honored as the best passer in the league, earning the title of League Player of the Week and a spot on the Eurobasket.com All-Swiss SBL Second Team.

Mongomo's professional journey has taken her to Canada, Luxembourg, and Spain, with stints at Sparta in Luxembourg and Gran Canaria in Spain. She has represented the Spanish U20 National Team in 2015 and made the OUA All-Rookie Team in 2016. She graduated from the University of Northern British Columbia in 2020, and this marks her fourth professional season, promising a valuable addition to Brunehaut. Maria Mongomo's experience and skills make her a key player to watch in the Belgium Top Division Women's league.
