Augusto "Gus" Binelli approached basketball in his hometown Carrara (Italy) at the age of 11, and from there he began his long playing career. Gus played for four seasons in the two teams of the city (Carrara Basket and Audax Carrara). At the age of 15 (in 1980) he left Carrara and moved to Bologna moving to the Virtus youth team.
In 1981 he travelled across the ocean to study and play basketball in the United States of America at Lutheran High School in New York, where he won a state title, being also named All American player.

Back from the American experience (in 1982), he won the youth championship in the Juniores category with Virtus Bologna. In the following year he joined the first team in Serie A, where he stayed until 2000.
In many years of militancy with Virtus he won:

5 Championships;
5 Italian Cups;
1 Euroleague;
1 Saporta Cup
1 European Basketball Club Super Cup

From 1984 to 1994 he had the privilege and the honor of wearing the blue jersey of the national team 102 times, winning 1 bronze medal at the 1985 European Championships in Stuttgart, also participating in 1 World Cup in Spain and 2 other European championships.
In 1986 he was chosen on the second round of the NBA Draft  from the Atlanta Hawks with which he participated in the summer rally in 1986 and 1988. He was the second Italian player in the history of basketball to be ever picked in the NBA Draft.
From 2000 to 2010 he played in several teams of as many categories:

1 year in Castelmaggiore A2;
1 year in Montegranaro A2;
2 years in Trapani B1;
3 years at Cento B1;
3 years in Anzola between B2 and C1

In 2020 he joined Interperformances as Regional Recruiter
